From the Peerless Pump website, www.peerlesspumps.com the LaBour Pump Company was established in 1921 at Michigan City, Indiana, USA by founder Harry E LaBour. The following year he patented and introduced the first valveless self-priming pump, and in 1923 the company moved to Chicago Heights, Illinois.
In 1929 in response to growing demand for this new pump the production facilities were expanded and the company was moved to Elkhart, Indiana where an iron foundry was added to the production facility.
The old Elkhart premises were demolished in 2010: some photos very kindly supplied by Denny Correll of Elkhart of this site will be added on the History page.
The UK branch was opened in 1937, the office site was in Artillery Row, London and the works at Raffield Road, Silvertown, London. They moved to Blundell Street London in 1938. See the History page for more info.
They moved up to Wellingborough Northamptonshire in 1967 to a new factory on the Denington Industrial Estate. As they were owned by the American LaBour Pump Company, the British LaBour was sold to Sterling Fluid Systems in 1994, resulting in the Wellingborough site being closed, with Sales, Spares and Drawing offices moving to Brackmills in Northampton.
Head Office was in Manchester so by the year 2000 they had closed the Northampton site and business came out from Manchester.
It was such a shame as the LaBour Pump Company was more of a UK family concern.
Mike Prior run the website and would like to express our sincere thanks to Samuel Shoesmith (Reg Tomkins' grandson) for all the help and guidance he has given us in setting up this website. Samuel, we couldn't have done it without you.
